HERE’S HOW TO USE YOUR SPORTS SCHEDULE
We have a few recommendations on how to maximize the effectiveness of this schedule. Keeping a detailed schedule will reveal all your options to you and help increase your winning percentage. Each player will have his or her own way to use this schedule. For this reason we refrained from labeling any of the columns.
Each box contains the teams and kickoff times for one game, the home team being listed on the bottom.
The boxes to right of the teams can be used in several different ways:
A) They can be filled in with the current point spread and total. The point spread should always be listed by the favorite and the total by the underdog to keep your numbers clear and consistent
B) Score can be kept in the boxes quarter by quarter. This way, by the end of the season, you will know each teams’ strong and weak quarters and can take advantage of halftime lines and quarter lines.
C) You can write your personal betting information in these boxes, so you can easily refer back and see on whom you wagered, how much, and at what line.
STRAIGHT BETS
In the four major sports, there are two ways to place a straight bet within that same game. At this time, we will only discuss straight bets in football and basketball. You can bet either the line in a game (referred to as SIDE) or how many points both teams in that particular contest (referred to as TOTAL) will score.
Denver 49
Green Bay -11
In the above example, Green Bay is the team expected to win and is referred to as the “favorite.” Green Bay must win the contest by at least 11 points in order to “cover.” In this instance Denver is the team expected to lose and is referred to as the “underdog.” The listed total for the contest is 49. In newspaper publications, the team, which is completely capitalized, will denote the home team, and at sportsbooks the team which is listed at the bottom, as in this rotation book, denotes the home team. If you place a straight bet on Green Bay, you are betting that Green Bay will win by at least 11 points. Conversely, if you bet on Denver, you are betting that even if they are not victorious in the game, Green Bay will not win by 11 points or more. Let’s say the final score was:
Denver 31
Green Bay 34
If you bet on Green Bay, you would have lost, for they did not win by at least 11 points. At DSI, like most sportsbooks, if you wagered $100 on Green Bay, your loss would be $110. On the other hand, if you wagered on Denver, you would have risked the same $110 to win $100. In other words, you are laying 11 to win 10. Odds in sportsbooks are listed in this manner: 10/11. The left-hand side of the backslash is what you stand to win and the right-hand side is the number you risk losing. In this contest, there were a total of 65 points scored. This exceeded the total of 49 that was predicted by the oddsmakers, so the game went OVER. If less than 49 points had been scored in the contest the game would have gone UNDER. On TOTALS at DSI, the odds are 10/11 once again. Now the question arises: Why does the loser have to pay more than the sportsbook pays to the winner?
The answer is easy. If ten people bet Denver at +11, and ten people bet Green Bay at –11, and they all bet it for $100, then the net profit that the sportsbook would take in would be $100. This difference is referred to as the “vigorish” or “juice”. This is why many sportsbooks will move the line in either direction to try to get the same amount wagered on both sides of the game. A line movement in any direction does not necessarily dictate the winner, but rather, on which team that the people are betting. Keep in mind, line movements should not solely influence your decisions. After all, you wouldn’t jump off a bridge just because your friends are, right?
DSI is one of the few sportsbooks in the world that actually generates its own lines for the betting public. Most sportsbooks around the world and in Las Vegas look to other books or services to determine their opening lines. Why not play at a sportsbook that creates their own line. That way you have first crack at the lines when they debut, before any significant movements have occurred. Plus your able to monitor the lines from the very beginning, as opposed to when some small-time bookmaker thinks it’s safe to release them.
FRIST HALF & HALF-TIME LINES IN FOOTBALL
At DSI, we offer first half and half time lines on all NFL games and most nationally televised NCAA games. A half-half and half time line could look like this:
Green Bay –4
TOTAL 22
You simply keep the score of the first and second halves-separated. Let’s suppose a total of 21 points were scored in the second half and Denver scored 14 of them. If you chose Green Bay, you would have lost, and those who chose Denver won. In reality, you are starting the contest over again using only the second half to determine the winner of this contest. Also, the second half only produced a combined score of 21 points, so the second half went under. Again, in most circumstances, your odds are 10/11 but can vary according to each game. An example of a half-time line might be Green Bay –4 and 22 over a quarter (25). In this instance, if you want to take the over in the second half, you will be laying $125 to win $100 as the sports book has put second half to go over as a favorite. Conversely, if you decide to take the under in the second half, you would be risking $100 to win $105.
MONEY LINES ON STRAIGHT BETS
In this section, we will discuss money lines on sporting events other than hockey or baseball. DSI provides money lines on all NFL games, all nationally televised NCAA games, and sporting events such as boxing. An example would be:
Green Bay –280
Denver + 240
When wagering on this type of line, you are predicting which team is going to win the contest outright, disregarding any type of point spread that might be available on the game. In the Super Bowl of 1998, Green Bay was a big favorite whereas, if you thought that Green Bay was going to win the game outright, you would be laying $280 to win $100. On the other hand, if you bet on Denver, you would be risking $100 to win $240. This same sort of bet is available in boxing and playoff or series events where multiple games are to be played to determine a winner.
Note: The difference between the two lines is the juice, or house take, for this type of wager. In this case it is 40. We would say this game has a 40-cent money line. DSI always offers the most competitive money line in the sports wagering industry.
BUYING POINTS ON A STRAIGHT LINE
How many times have you lost a game by a half-point? DSI allows our patrons to buy up to 3 points to move a line in their favor for football or basketball games, if they wish. Each ½ point increment bought increases the amount the customer has to lay by 10 cents. Example:
Denver 49
Green Bay -11
In the above example, you could buy points up or down on either the total or the side. If you wanted Green Bay laying only 10 ½ points, and then you would be risking $120 to win $100. You could do the same if you wanted the Denver side of the game, and you wanted 11 ½ points, and the risk would be the same.
Note: Because many football games end up being decided by exactly 3 points (i.e. an overtime field goal) you must risk more whenever you are buying points on or off the 3-point line. Therefore, whenever you are buying points, and you come off or go on the 3-point line, that particular step will be a 20-cent increment. An example would be if Green Bay was favored by 3 ½ points in this game, and if you desired to wager on Green Bay at –3.Then you would be risking $130 to win $100 at a new line of Green Bay-3.
You can also buy points to adjust the total of the game. Say you wanted to wager on the over 49 total. You could lower this total in your favor to 48 ½ by buying a ½ point, and, if the game were to land on 49, you would be a winner. In this example, you would be risking $120 to win $100.
½ Point You Lay -120
1 Point You Lay -130
1 ½ points You Lay -140
2 Points You Lay -150
2 ½ Points You Lay – 160
3 Points You Lay – 170
DSI also allows its customers to buy points in a parlay, if they so desire. This will be discussed in the next section.
PARLAYS BETS
A parlay wager is similar to playing a trifecta at a racetrack. The word parlay speaks for itself. It is a means of risking a small sum of money to attain a large payoff by combining two or more straight wagers. Although it is harder to pick more than one team at the same time, you are laying no odds except your original bet. At DSI, you are allowed to parlay any wagers on sides and totals that are available in ALL FOUR MAJOR SPORTS! You can mix or match all four sports in your parlay or even play a parlay within one single contest. For example, you can parlay a team in basketball with a total in football game.
OUR PARLAY PAYOFFS ARE AS FOLLOWS:
2 teams picked correctly will pay 13/5 or you risk $100 to win… $260
3 teams picked correctly will pay 6/1 or you risk $100 to win … $600
4 teams picked correctly will pay 11/1 or you risk $100 to win .. $1,100
5 teams picked correctly will pay 20/1 or you risk $100 to win… $2,000
6 teams picked correctly will pay 40/1 or you risk $100 to win… $4,000
7 teams picked correctly will pay 70/1 or you risk $100 to win… $7,000
8 teams picked correctly will pay 100/1 or you risk $100 to win…$10,000
Note: These payoffs are for regular straight wagers where $110 is risked to win $100. Money lines will affect the payoffs accordingly.
All selections in a parlay must win by the adjusted point spread margin. The more selections included in a parlay, the greater the payoff, as indicated above. In the event of a tie in any selection, the parlay is reduced to the next lowest parlay-betting bracket. In the event that you are playing a 4-team parlay and one team pushes, the parlay would revert to a 3-team parlay, and so forth. In the event that you are playing a two-team parlay and one-selection results in a tie, the payoff would be $91 on a $100 wager. Regardless of any ties in a parlay, if any of the teams lose, the entire parlay reverts to a loss.
Remember that you are also allowed to buy points for any or all selections in your parlay. The payoff will simply be reduced accordingly.
When calling in parlays, the term “Round Robin” could be used to quicken your phone call and produce added profits for you. “Round Robin” refers to picking 3 to 8 teams and matching them up in as many 2-team parlays as possible. The amount you bet will be bet on each of the 2-team parlays. The match ups for a 3-team (A, B, and C) Round Robin would be as follows: Team A parlayed with Team B, Team B with Team C, and Team A with Team C, or three separate parlays on one wager. Let’s say this Round Robin is wagered for $100. If only 2 teams win, you will still see a profit of $60 on a $100 Round Robin parlay. However, you risk loosing $300 if 2 or 3 teams lose, but stand to win $780 if all win!
TEASER WAGERS
DSI is the home of the world’s greatest teaser odds. In football, a teaser wager allows you to adjust the point spread in your favor by 6, 6½, 7, or even 10 or 13 points! Whenever you have a two-team teaser, and you have a win and tie your two-team teaser, is considered a push. At most sportsbooks this is considered a loss. Not at DSI. Plus DSI offers this great advantage: we allow you to tease either totals or sides, even in the same game, and even 10 and 13 points!
Example: Denver 49
Green Bay –11
Final score: Green Bay 27, Denver 21
Taking a 7-point teaser, using Green Bay and the over in the game, you would be a winner on both sides since your final score would be: Green Bay 34, Denver 21. (This teaser pays 100 for 130 just like a straight bet.) When you placed this wager over the phone the operator would read back to you “Green Bay–Denver to go over 42 and Green Bay -4.” You simply add to or subtract from the final score that your team scored according to how you placed your teaser wager. If you took the over in the game, you would actually need the game to go over 42 (49-7) to be a winner, and if you took the under as a teaser for 7 points, you need the game to go under 56 (49 + 7). Remember that you can tease totals or sides in one game or any combination of other games, mix or match, at your will.
Multiple teasers using 3 or more selections are sometimes referred to as a teaser parlays, for if you won a seven-team 6-point teaser, you risk $100 to win $800 in football. In using multiple team teasers, as in parlays, if one selection pushed, it would then revert own to the next lowest teaser, but if any selections lose it is an overall loss. In a 2-team teaser, if one pushed and the other won, it would not revert to a single play as in a parlay, but rather, it would be considered a tie or “no action.” Remember, at DSI, you can mix and match totals and sides for both the NFL and College football, and you do not have to wait until game day to do so. You can play your teasers on Sunday after the lines are available.
Note: In 10 or 13 point teasers, all teams must win. Any tie will result in an overall push. Regardless of any ties in any teaser, if any of the teams lose, the entire teaser is a loss.
OPEN TEASERS
An “open teaser” played at DSI is a situation where you can play up to three teams, selecting one team at a time on separate phone calls, or even on different days. When making your first call to the operator, you must specify what type of teaser you’re playing, and all subsequent calls will conform to the original teaser wager selected. In other words, you cannot expand or decrease the number of teams that you are originally specified, or the amount of points designated on your original call. The following basic rules pertain to all teaser wagers.
- A two-team teaser shall be considered “no action” if one of the selections tie.
- A three-team sweetheart teaser of 10 or 13 points in football will be “no action” if any of the three selections results in a tie, the teaser shall be considered a loss, if any of the selections results in a loss.
- A three-team teaser, other than those of the 10 points or 13 point variety, in which one team ties, reverts down to a two-team teaser. If the three-team teaser results in two ties and one wins, it will be considered “no action”.
- An open teaser shall be considered a loss if the first selection loses, regardless of the number of teams selected or number of points designated. If the first selection results in a tie, the entire teaser wager shall be considered “no action”.
- Regardless of any ties in any teaser, if any teams lose, the entire teaser is a loss
IF BETS
“If bets” are available to customers who want action on a second game only if they successfully win the first game. Most people believe that this is only used when a late game may start before the conclusion of the first game that they have wagered on. This is partly true, because your account is updated only after a game becomes final, not before. Players who do not have enough funds in their account to make their desired wager on the next game are wise to call in their first wager, and on the same call, state that “if” that game wins, they desire to have action on the next game. You can also request an “if bet” when both games are being played simultaneously. In either case, you only need to have enough funds in your account to cover the wager on your first game. Up to 8 picks can be included in one “if bet”. When the first game wins, the same amount will be wager on the next. Of course, if the first game does not win, then there is “no action” on any of the following parts of your “if bet”. Therefore, the order of picks is very important. Your strongest picks should be placed first.
Note: With no exceptions, your “if bet” must be placed in one phone call.
REVERSE BETS
A reverse is an “if bet” where the same amount is also wagered on the same teams in the reverse order. The maximum loss is $220 and the maximum win is $400 in a $100 reverse.
1 Win / 1 Loss Both Teams Lose 1 Win / 1 Push Both Teams Win
________________________________________________________________
Lose $120 Lose $220 Win $200 Win $400
FUTURE WAGERS
Throughout the year, DSI will post future odds on various sports championships. You may wager on your favorite team to win the Super Bowl, World Series, NBA Championship, or NCAA basketball championship. You can enhance your enjoyment of league play throughout the season with the future bet. If you would like to make a future bet, and it is not listed on our board, please ask our staff and we will try to accommodate you.
ACTION POINTS
This is the ultimate wager for the handicapper of football or basketball. This is for the guy who thinks his pick will not only cover the spread, but also crush their opponent. With action points, the player gets paid for every point scored beyond the spread. All action point wagers are capped at a maximum of twenty points and can be used with any point spread of 15 points or less. Also, the amount you risk (or stand to gain) cannot exceed the available funds in your account. With action points, you risk $110 for every $100 wagered. Example:
Denver 49
Green Bay -5
Suppose you wager $100 a point on the Green Bay and ask for a cap of 11 points. Green Bay must win by at least 5 points, and for every point over the point spread of 5 that they win by, you win $100. You have the chance of winning between $100 and $1,100. If Green Bay wins by 9 points, your net winnings would be $400. On the other hand, if Green Bay fails to cover the point spread, you risk $110 for every point that they fall short of the 5-point spread. You can also use action points on totals, either over or under or the underdog (in this contest, Denver, getting 5 points).
PROPOSITION WAGERING
In many sporting events, such as the Super Bowl, DSI offers proposition wagering on such things as who will win the coin toss, score the first touchdown, etc. These proposition wagers can be faxed to our customers upon request. Each proposition is assigned a rotation number to make it easier for you to call your wagers in to our operators. We provide proposition wagers on major boxing matches in reference to rounds, etc., but please check the rules for proposition wagers on boxing matches for more details.
BOXING
In the event of a draw, monies wagered on the fight itself will be refunded. However, wagering is available for specific fight propositions, such as a draw, either fighter by knockout or decision, or specific round knockout, etc. In the event that either fighter does not make the required weight, but the fight goes on, the following stipulations apply: 1) When the bell sounds for the first round, the bout will be considered official, regardless of the scheduled length or title. 2) The bout must have the original scheduled length for a wager on a round proposition to have action.
